National Rifle Association
With little or no experience with firearms, I took the Learn to Shoot class. Since I didn't own a firearm I paid the extra money to use his firearm & ammunition. It was a great choice since I got to shoot with multiple firearms, which helped me decide which firearm to purchase or which firearm will suit my lifestyle. This class was totally worth it. I then took the CHL/LTC class which was not boring as I initially thought, but I found it very informative. Sandy has a lot of experience with firearms and those experiences made this class very interesting. He was very patient to answer all questions I had, especially the dumb questions. I was able to pass both the tests, the shooting & the written tests. I had called him before signing up for any of the classes and he was very helpful and he advised me on process of applying for the LTC. I received my LTC within a few weeks. I will highly recommend Sandy and Mckinney Firearms Training.

Texas CHL classes (AKA LTC in Texas, or License To Carry) follow the Texas state-mandated requirements, and are taught as directed by The Texas Dept of Public Safety. Classroom instruction requires approximately 4 hours, plus a short test, plus the shooting proficiency test. This is a no-fail course.

Texas CHL/LTC Classes

We offer the

License to Carry Class

for just $65.00 (including range fees) (discounts are available to students who learned how to shoot here). These are often small classes, so you have plenty of opportunity to interact with the instructor and the class, and ask questions. The Texas License to Carry class takes about 4 hours to complete, and consists of several modules, covering
  • Laws that relate to carrying a handgun
  • Laws that relate to use of force and deadly force
  • Handgun use and safety
  • Holsters
  • Non-violent dispute resolution
  • Proper storage practices for handguns

Everything will be completed in one day. Private classes are available. Non-English speakers, go here.

Handgun License Checklist

Please note that the Texas LTC class is not about learning to shoot. You should already have at least minimal proficiency with a handgun before signing up.
If in doubt, go to a range and see if you can hit a paper plate at 3 yards 3 out of 4 times. If you can, you should be fine.

Basic Pistol

Many people who are interested in getting a gun license have not yet learned to shoot, so for them, we also offer this:

Learn to Shoot

. Done entirely at a private range NE of McKinney, we spend about 2 hours in a small class learning safety and fundamentals, and an hour in supervised shooting. The classroom is air conditioned, with restrooms. (Recommended)

  • Firearm safety
  • Handgun features and nomenclature
  • Revolver vs. semi-automatic
  • Action types
  • Ammunition types
  • Safe pistol loading and clearing
  • Eye dominance
  • Establishing the shooting platform
  • Laser pistol training
  • Dry-fire and live-fire practice
These students generally do quite well on the LTC Proficiency, and discounts are available for that class. Note that getting a gun license in Texas is not required in order to either buy a gun, or keep one at home or in your vehicle.

Intermediate Shooting

For those who already know how to load, fire, and clear their gun, this private live-fire pistol instruction is intended to fine-tune your skills. Training may include more advanced defensive skills, like one-handed shooting, rapid-fire, and flash picture sighting.

We follow NRA and DPS protocols, and we take handgun safety seriously. Please see the CHL and Pistol Class Schedule

Defensive Shotgun

An introduction to the tactical shotgun, the ultimate in home defense. Learn about the equipment, the ammo choices, and the tactics, and experience shooting it. The shotgun is the most devastating weapon it is legal for a civilian to own, but requires little skill to operate.

School Safety Certification / Active Shooter Training

For teachers and other employees of public/private school systems, this two-day class is intensive active shooter training. It includes identifying threats, barricading classrooms, helping students escape, self-defense strategies with or without a firearm, combat mindset, and other topics. McKinney Firearms Training is the first company in Dallas certified by Texas DPS to teach this certification course.

There is a shorter version of the above for Church Security Team training.

TCOLE or LEOSA Proficiency

Yes, we will do those, on request, $25.00
