The .22 caliber "rimfire" cartridge is one of the oldest extant self-contained cartridges still in use, dating back to the mid-19th C. Used in rifles, revolvers, and semi-auto pistols, the .22 is one of the most popular and ubiquitous calibers in existence. While it has a long history of use in small game hunting, in modern times it has emerged as a very popular caliber for competition shooting. Of more import for our context, it has been traditionally used to introduce pre-teens to safe firearm use, both in Boy Scout settings, and father-to-son.
To be clear, the .22 will kill a person, so it is not a BB gun, but it is less forceful than the larger center-fire cartridges normally used in self defense. There is a greater possibility that wounds will not be fatal, but there are no guarantees.
The .22 is not normally considered to be practical for self defense for the same reason that it is often used as an entry point for learning about firearms: it is very soft shooting, and very easy as a learning tool. I learned to shoot one at age 9.
This class is intended for 1 to 3 people from the same family, typically age 10 or above, although some adult ladies might find this a good way for them to feel comfortable with firearms. We will learn the firearm safety rules, and learn to load and shoot a rifle and a handgun. Guns and ammo are provided.
